The Art of Letting Go: Travel Light, Live Free
Let this sink in:
I am a part of this earth, and the earth is part of me.
I own nothing, and nothing owns me.
I carry memories, not things.
These words have become my mantra as my partner and I prepare for our move to Costa del Sol, Spain. We’ve done this before—packing our lives down to two bags each, shedding the weight of unnecessary possessions. What once felt like loss now feels like freedom.
Letting go wasn’t always easy. I used to cling to old ticket stubs, a worn-out t-shirt, or that random trinket from a past trip, believing they held my memories. But technology has freed me—photos and digital archives carry the moments, not the clutter. The less I own, the more space I have for experiences.
And here’s what’s wild: once you start letting go, you see the excess everywhere. Take food, for example. America wastes so much of it—enough to feed every hungry person across North America. We don’t just overbuy; we overeat. What if the secret to cutting your food bill in half was as simple as eating half as much? Would we feel any less full? Or just less burdened?
A Challenge for You
1. Let go of one thing today – Find an object you haven’t touched in a year and donate it. Feel the lightness of release.
2. Eat just a little less – Not as deprivation, but as an experiment. Notice if you feel any different. Maybe, just maybe, satisfaction comes from something deeper than consumption.
Less truly can mean more. More space. More freedom. More clarity. What will you let go of today?
